A economia do concelho assenta em grande parte na agricultura, com destaque para o vinho generoso (o célebre vinho do Porto) que domina o norte do concelho, nos vales dos rios Távora, Torto, Tedo e do inconfundível Rio Douro. É sede de um município com 142 km² de área e 6.785 habitantes, subdividido em 17 freguesias. O município faz fronteira com os municípios de Sabrosa, São João da Pesqueira, Sernancelhe, Moimenta da Beira e com Armamar. Pertence ao distrito de Viseu, na Região Norte e sub-região Douro.
