As investigações arqueológicas têm revelado que os primeiros contactos das populações locais com o vinho, vindo do Mediterrâneo, ocorreram há mais de dois mil anos, a partir do século VIII a.C. através de contactos com os fenícios ou os gregos. No centro do distrito de Faro, tem uma área total de 679 Km2 e conta atualmente com cerca de 37 mil habitantes. Inserido na Região Vitivinícola do Algarve, pertence à Denominação de Origem de Lagoa. Pertence igualmente à Rota de Vinhos do Algarve.
