As inúmeras iniciativas de dinamização do setor robusteceram o crescimento da atividade, muito centrado na melhoria das técnicas de cultura da vinha e de produção dos vinhos. Concelho raiano que integra o distrito de Beja. Tem uma área de 958 km2 e uma população residente de 15.167 habitantes. Faz fronteira com Espanha e tem ligação ao Rio Guadiana e à Albufeira de Alqueva. Pertence à região vitivinícola do Alentejo e é parte integrante da Rota de Vinhos do Alentejo.
