Desconhece-se quando é que a vinha terá sido introduzida no Concelho de Mafra, mas sabe-se que a sua existência é secular, remontando à Idade Média. Integrado ao norte da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, ocupa uma área de 291 km2, com uma população de mais de 83 mil residentes. Faz parte da região vitivinícola de Lisboa. A proximidade da costa atlântica reflete-se diretamente na qualidade dos vinhos produzidos no território.
