Alenquer apresenta-se desde a Idade Média como um concelho de forte tradição vitivinícola, que é atestada através do Foral da Portagem, de 1377, que permite a exportação de vinho de Alenquer para Lisboa. O concelho de Alenquer, pertencente ao distrito de Lisboa e situado na Região Oeste tem uma área total de 304.2 km2 e cerca de 43 545 habitantes. Inserido na Região Vitivinícola de Lisboa, pertence à Rota dos Vinhos de Lisboa.
