Possui uma área total de 398,2km², distribuídos pelas suas 14 freguesias. É um concelho com baixa densidade populacional, oscilando entre os sete e oito mil habitantes. Fica situado a norte do Distrito da Guarda, Região Norte (NUTS II) e na sub-região do Douro (NUST III).
