Aqui, no cume da Serra da Melriça, situa-se o vértice geodésico de primeira ordem, conhecido por Picoto da Melriça, que assinala o Centro Geodésico de Portugal. A área de 193,44 km2 do concelho é ocupada por cerca de 5000 habitantes, repartidos por 94 pequenas localidades que compõem as três freguesias: Vila de Rei, Fundada e São João do Peso.
