Comprovadamente desde a Época Romana se produz vinho em Nelas, mas foi após os Descobrimentos que famílias abastadas investiram no cultivo da Vinha, transformando o modo de produção e criando uma paisagem cultural única com um “terroir” invejável. Tem uma área total de 124,57 km2 e 14 037 habitantes (Censos 2011). O concelho de Nelas está situado no centro da Região Vitivinícola do Dão (integrando a Rota dos Vinhos do Dão), no interflúvio dos rios Dão e Mondego que serpenteiam ao longo das serranias do Caramulo e da Estrela.
