É uma terra com quase seis séculos de história e um concelho que ao longo do tempo sobreviveu essencialmente da pesca e da agricultura, assumindo a produção de vinho, banana e outras espécies frutícolas particular relevo na economia regional. Situa-se na vertente sul da Região Autónoma da Madeira, em pleno Oceano Atlântico, e tem pouco mais de 52 km2. É o segundo concelho mais populoso da Região Autónoma da Madeira, com cerca de 40 mil habitantes, e cerca de 45% da população tem menos de 25 anos.
